Al-Wajih Kanoo’s family made a generous financial donation through Mr. Saud Kanoo, representative of Yusuf bin Ahmed Kanoo Company, to construct a dialysis building in Busaiteen, Muharraq Governorate. The project started on May 15, 2008, and the building was completed on January 15, 2011. Medical equipment and furniture were installed in May 2011.
The center was built in the old traditional style and includes three floors, each of which has an area of 1,100 square feet. The current capacity of the center is 58 beds.
The composition of each of the three floors is as follows
1. Ground floor: Patients’ Affairs service, reception hall, pharmacy, laboratory, Radiology, an office for social and psychological services (provides mental and emotional consultative services). Also included are a Peritoneal dialysis unit with treatment room and stores, doctors’ offices, and a laboratory for the maintenance of medical devices.
2. First floor: a reception hall and main halls (for patients in need of chronic hemodialysis). The main halls have a total of 46 beds. There are also treatment rooms, rooms for other medical support services, and various offices.
3. Second floor: a hemodialysis hall with a capacity of 8 beds, 2 single rooms for hemodialysis, 2 private rooms for VIP patients, treatment rooms, prayer rooms for women and men, a lecture hall, a nutrition unit that provides a suitable diet plan for kidney patients, meeting rooms, doctors’ offices, and administrative services offices.
The trial operation began on July 17, 2011, with the admission of three hemodialysis cases per week, for a week-long treatment period. On September 14, 2011, the number of patients increased to 16 cases per week, with a further increase to 32 cases implemented in December 2011. This is according to the first plan of the four operating plans considered.
Each patient receives 3 treatment sessions per week with each session lasting from 3 to 4 hours. The number of sessions may be extended to 4 per week, depending on the recommendations of the attending physician.
The Abdul Rahman Kanoo Center for Kidney Diseases is an example of a successful community partnership, and one of the distinguished medical facilities that provides health services to kidney patients. This center effectively contributes to relieving pressure on the overcrowded kidney treatment units at the Salmaniya Medical Complex.
